Toward Independence

Toward Independence provides a framework of activities through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited for those with more challenging learning difficulties and profound multiple learning differences. Toward Independence offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal. Modules can be used separately and accumulated to build a record of personal achievement. Students who study Toward Independence work on key life skills and communication skills necessary for day to day living.

Examples of skills worked on:

  • Money skills
  • Time skills
  • Self management
  • Communication skills in class and in the community
  • Independence skills in the community
  • Catering assistant
  • Sports and fitness
  • Me, myself and I

Sport and Fitness plays a key role in developing the agility, coordination and gross motor skills of our students. Sporting activities are performed at the Canggu Club and include gym training, survival swimming, trampolining and soccer. Our students attend vocational training to build on their current skills and expose them to a working environment. Examples of vocational courses include: Horsemanship, Cycling at Bali Bike Park, Hospitality Course at Montigo Resort, Seminyak and Food Preparation at Sheraton, Kuta. Our goal is to individualise each student\’s program, and incorporate key skills where the student requires further support. Having a high teacher to student ratio means that our students recieve one on one support or small class sizes of 5 students with two teachers. We have the ability to individualise student\’s programs and teach them the required skills in a intimate learning space. Please see below an example of a student\’s timetable: This is an example of a student\’s timetable combinations. Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Counselling can also be added to any student\’s timetable. This student receives one on one support for Literacy, Communication and Numeracy as needs for further support are identified in their enrollment assessment. They attend group classes for Me, Myself and I, Training, Sport & Fitness and Life Skills.
